Can I ask you a question?
Let me guess.
You already know. Why we celebrate Auckland Anniversary Day.
In 1841, Lieutenant-Governor William Hobson decreed that 29 January would become Auckland's Anniversary, marking the day in 1840 when he arrived in the Bay of Islands - three hundred kilometres north in the Bay of Islands.
Officially, 29 January is a Auckland’s anniversary but held every year on the Monday closest to the 29th of January.
So people can enjoy a long weekend.
Auckland Anniversary Day public event is widely celebrated in Auckland and the public holiday usually falls on the Monday.
